Focus Health and Empowerment Initiative (FOHEI).... Excessive poverty is a barrier to a good healthcare.
FOHEI is poised to provide strategic understanding of health and wellness opportunities to the society and facilitate healthcare services for the less privileged.
Having as its major focus the desire to improve access to healthcare for remote, underserved communities in Nigeria particularly within the North Central zone and partner with government agencies, business and nonprofits organizations to improve the performance and reliability of health systems in the most inaccessible and isolated last mile communities, our member for this month, Focus Health and Empowerment Initiative (FOHEI) is a healthcare, wellness and empowerment non-governmental organization.
From documents made available to our Editor by FOHEI Programme Director, Philip Simeon Eche, the novel Initiative was first launched in Igah Okpaya Ward in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State as Ochabiye Health Plan.
According to Mr. Eche, “We successfully launched the scheme in this community on October 1st, 2004 and have managed the Family Support Health Center that is situated in the community up till today. National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Inspection Team (led by Dr. Yakubu Agada) visited the programme in July 2005 and we were invited to Abuja in October 2005 to participate in the Pilot Scheme Retreat where we made our presentation and made a strong case for community participation for the Pilot Scheme.
“We are planning an expanded programme to add to our scope of coverage to Dutsen Alhaji in Bwari Area Council of FCT, Arah community in Lokoja Local Government of Kogi State and Agwatshi in Doma Local Government of Nasarawa State. This plan hopes to be translated into reality by second quarter of next year. Our volunteer’s field workers are presently surveying communities in Plateau State for us to key them into the Scheme.”
HOW WE STARTED:
FOHEI was set up as Oluma Trust Initiatives in 16th February 2004 with a deep conviction and in sympathy with our rural community dwellers in their economic and health needs. We partner and facilitate poverty alleviation and health insurance scheme to interested members of the catchment communities with the willingness to pay a token premium in order to access uninterrupted healthcare services.
This scheme is an increasingly recognized tool to empower and finance healthcare provision in low income and informal sector of the economy. It is a risk sharing programme characterized by mutual assistance, strong solidarity and the collective pooling of economic and health risks. It is a non-profit making venture with a strong unique selling point of providing high quality delivery service where the vulnerable members get real value for their token contributions.
Apart from collection of monthly contributions, FOHEI provides outreach enlightenment education and information services on environment sanitation, communicable diseases as HIV-AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Tuberculosis (TB) and preventive diseases as malaria, Polio and diarrhea. To press home this campaign, FOHEI organizes flexible, dynamic and innovative drama to the rural communities within the catchments communities.
