The nonprofit management training organised by the Nigeria Network of NGOs with the support of Google.org will introduce nonprofit leaders to key current management issues for nonprofit organisations. Strategic planning, work planning, budgeting, communications, nonprofit friendly digital tools, skills and apps, reporting-narrative and financial management and board engagement. will all be addressed along with case studies to give insights into how professionals across the sector are applying key management concepts to grow and achieve their organisations vision and mission.

This 3 days face-to-face training (in line with COVID-19 prevention methods) offers an array of interactive exercises, case studies, videos, selected reading, self-assessments that will engage participants and help them practice effective management of human and financial resources in a nonprofit setting. After each course, participants will engage in assignments meant to test concepts, principles, innovations, best practices and guidance covered during the training. A certificate of completion will be awarded.

Who should attend?

This training is aimed at a wide range of nonprofit staff tasked with the management, design and implementation of strategies, plans and activities relating to meeting the vision and mission of their organisations, particularly senior management staff of nonprofits. The following requirements are therefore essential to participate:

  • Access to a computer
  • Availability for all of the 3 days
  • Knowledge and access to organsations income and expenditure, activities, programmes and projects.
  • Commitment to making use of learning and participation in follow up evaluations

Courses/Subject/Topics Covered
Leading in a crisis

Before we delve into other components of the training, this course will provide the foundation and introduction to the fundamentals on leading a nonprofit organisation in a crisis. It will provide participants the opportunity to share and x-ray leadership challenges in a period of uncertainty. We will also explore insights and guidance on leadership from respected leaders within civil society, business, and public sector.



Every sector – public, private, and civil society thrives on developing strategies for fulfilling their organisational vision and mission. Nonprofit organisations can benefit from developing and implementing a strategy that details what it will do, how it will do it, when it will be done, who will do it and what is required to do it including how to know it has been done. Though this training nonprofit managers will understand nonprofit strategy and how it helps the organisation become sustainable and navigate the life cycle of a nonprofit.


Work planning

When we think of planning, what comes to mind is the activities that the organisation does whereas a work plan is a detailed narrative outlining exactly how your organisation plan to implement its strategic plan annually. This course will examine how nonprofits use work plans to ensure accountability to the Board and other stakeholders, develop budgets, management of organisational activities, staffing and develop effective project management process.


No one doubts that you know too well the importance of budgeting to the operations on a nonprofit and how this helps to demonstrate transparency and accountability. During the training you will gain an understanding of the uses and functions of budgets and the relationship between strategic budgeting, organisational budget and project budget including different ways of budgeting. The training will also feature advanced topics around budgeting in a crisis, building reserves, capital budgets, cash flow and opportunity budgets.



Effective communication is an essential tool for communicating your impact and for marketing your organisation. This training will introduce participants to the use of traditional and new media in communicating, marketing, public relations and fundraising for nonprofits. It will explore the use of communication tools and digital platforms as a means for outreach to different audiences and in ensuring transparency and accountability.

Nonprofit digital tools, skills and apps

One important lessons COVOD-19 has thought us as a sector is in the use of digital technologies and apps that can increase or improve productivity and enhance collaboration in real time while working from different locations across multiple time zones. This course offers an introduction to digital tools nonprofits can use in their day-to-day operations, skills and apps that are relevant to workflow process, productivity, and improved visibility.

Reporting- Narrative

Reporting is one of the central activities of a nonprofit and nonprofit management. To help show their impact and level of transparency nonprofits must report on their activities to regulators, its board, beneficiaries, donors and other stakeholders. This training offers practical steps to planning and creating valuable engaging reports on the organisation’s activities and finances- one that your friends, donors, beneficiaries and other stakeholders would want to read.


Financial management

Understanding your organsations financial health and effective management of resources is critical to the growth and sustainability of your organisation. This course will develop your ability to appropriately develop systems and processes for managing your finances, appropriately interpret and generate accounting reports. You will gain an understanding of the financial reporting methods, audit systems and processes used by nonprofits, record keeping and how to use financial statements and reports in accessing your organisations financial performance and decision making.


Board engagement

As owners in trust, board members play an especially important role in helping to set strategy, guide direction and provide oversight for the activities of nonprofits with the aim of ensuring the organisations mission and vision is fulfilled. Engaging the board effectively in the activities of the nonprofit is a critical part of nonprofit management. This training will cover the fundamentals of board engagement from recruitment and retention to communication and performance evaluation
